For anyone who uses iOS/iPadOS, Mac and Carbon Copy Cloner I have written an iOS shortcut that displays data
about the last completed CCC tasks and their schedules: CCC
You have to allow shortcuts from Untrusted source:
Settings
Shortcuts
Allow Untrusted Shortcuts (this may be turned off after shorted is installed)
When the shortcut is first run it will prompt for Mac's address, username and password.
The shortcut ssh's onto Mac and runs a script (included in Shortcut) that has the Mac
retrieve data using the ccc command line that is contained within the Carbon Copy Cloner app bundle.
It then generates html which is displayed on iPad.
See What is Hide My Email?
I use this facility a lot: typically when I register for a new website I create a new email address. If I stop using the website
or start receiving spam to that address I can deactivate (then delete) that email:
Settings
Your name
iCloud
Hide My Email
What I hadn't realised until a couple of months ago was that when composing an email you can send from a new
Hide My Email adresses. You simply click on the From and from the list available adresses click on Hide My Email
at the bottom of the list.
In iPadOS15 (currently in public beta) split screen multitasking has been made much easier.
Rather than relying on gestures a new menu is introduced at the top of the screen of compatible apps.
This menu, labelled with an ellipsis, gives three options allowing the current app to be shown full screen, split screen or
slide-over.
In ?20191107 it mentions scanning in Files App. It wasn't mentioned at time that it is also possible to scan in Notes.
But now it's worth mentioning as scanning in Notes also does OCR. Choose the camera icon at top right and select
Scan Document.
The scan can be exported to a PDF but it appears that is just an image rather than containing the OCR'd text.
NB Notes also OCRs handwritten notes (that is ones written in Notes rather then a scan of handwrting).
If you are using a physical keyboard on an ios device then many apps have
keyboard shorts cuts using
Cmd key
or, on a PC keyboard
Windows key
Hold it down to see what is available.
Outlook Mail
From the Files App select Browse
Navigate to a location you wish to put scanned document.
Swipe down on file list to reveal
Tap ... then Scan Documents
It is possible, using the Files App to access external media such as USB memory sticks and hard drives.
You need to use a Lightning to USB adaptor capable of delivering sufficient current. Many third party adaptors only supply
100mA. Apple's USB3 adaptor can deliver 500mA. I haven't managed to get a hard drive to work on my iPhone (I shall try
on an iPad) but have had success with USB sticks.
Update
* I have now tried on iPad and hard drive doesnt work. Appears that although reported as 500mA devices they are
using more.
* Hard drives may be accessed via a USB adaptor as long as the hard drive is powered separately e.g.
Y-splitter connecting USB to iPhone charger.
Unlike with previous versions of iOS it's possible to open files directly off the stick as well as copy files to and from it.
The Files app can also access network drives though is not as accomplished as FileExplorer (or FileExplorer Pro,
my preferred file manager).
I had been receiving duplicate notifications on my iPhone recently. A message arrived and I would get a notification.
A little later (although apparently two minutes) a second notification would arrive.
I don't remember enabling this but have turned them off:
Settings - Notifications - Messages - Repeat Alerts - Never
That had been set to once ie. one repeat two minutes after first notification.
When you create an event in the Calendar app on iOS you are presented with a date/time picker which allows the time
to be set at five-minute increments.
It is possible to change to one-minute increments by double-tapping on the minute
Later this year iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 will be released. The latter is a fork of iOS containing an increasing number of
iPad-only features. My iPad Mini 2 cannot be upgraded to iPad OS 13 so I am unlikely to post anything about it, other than
links to User Guide. But I shall upgrade my iPhone SE to iOS 13.
It is possible to see the whole globe in Apple Maps but
1) Has to be in Satellite View (click on ⓘ)
2) Has to be zoomed in quite a bit before 3D button appears.
It's possible to have notifications that do not announce themselves but still appear in Notification Centre
by sliding from right over the notication you wish to change and selecting "Manage - Deliver Quietly"
For several years in has been possible to move the iPad cursor by dragging two fingers across the on-screen keyboard.
On iPhone/iPad running iOS 12 hold the space bar with one finger then drag that finger around the keyboard to move the
cursor. You can tap with a second finger to make a selection. Lift the second finger and move first to re-size the selection.
In both cases, once the touchpad mode is on the keyboard captions will disappear.
Note Since iOS12 the web-based version is just for latest verion of iOS so the links will point to iOS13 then iOS14 etc.
https://help.apple.com/iphone/7/ - https://help.apple.com/iphone/11/ and
https://help.apple.com/ipad/7/ - https://help.apple.com/ipad/11/still exist.
If you have two factor authentication enabled attempts to log in to https://www.icloud.com/ result in a request for a
verification code which would have been sent to one of your other devices (iPhone, Mac etc.) that is logged into iCloud.
So, if you want to find a mislaid iPhone and all you have is access to a web browser how do you access Find My iPhone?
At the bottom of the screen requesting the verification code are direct links that may be used without entering the code.
You may have to scroll the window:

iOS 11 is to be released "today" (that is 19th September Pacific Daylight Time I assume).
For me, two interesting features of beta have been screen recording and handwriting recognition (in Notes for example).
The latter is performed on device and so does not require a network connection.
There are times when apps that rely on Apple's iCloud service do not function correctly. It could be that you have your
credentials incorrectly entered, that you have a network issue or that there is something wrong at Apple's end.
The state of Apple's services
You can see the state of the services in other countries by clicking on UK at bottom right of this page.
ios 10.3 introduces a new file system - APFS to replace HFS+. The latter will continue to be used on Mac till later this
year. Because of this the update will be slower than usual and the device will restart more then once during the update
procedure. It's worth making sure you have a backup before performing this update.
I have been asked several times about alternatives to the built-in email app.
Spark is a well regarded example. I have tried it but don't use it as I don't have any real issue with the built in apps.
Although it doesn't address one of the main gripes (that nested folders cannot be collapsed/expanded) it does have
several features which users may like: access to calender, ability to "snooze" a message amongst other things.
With Google Maps you can find parking near a location simply by tying e.g. parking near plymouth pavilions.
Type the same into Apple Maps and you will see "No results found."
Instead, type plymouth pavilions to set the location.
Then you can type parking or pizza etc.
Click on one of the parking locations and you will see details such as number of spaces, times that it is open etc.
It is possible to present from Keynote on an iOS device, Mac or iCloud.com. On iOS click ... and select "Use Keynote Live".
From there you can send invites. There can be quite a long delay as the presentation has to be uploaded to iCloud.
If presenting via iOS or a Mac it is also possible to use another as a remote control
This may be used to advance the slide, show a virtual laser pointer and to annotate slide as it is being viewed.
In Keynote on the device to be the remote contol click on
See Get started with Keynote Live Use Keynote Remote on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
I don't think in Apple Mail there is a way to collapse folders.
What can be done is add folders to "favourites" in list at top.
Ones listed there do not show subfolders (OK, not same thing but
may be a suitable bodge for some).
You can add your most used folders to there to speed up navigation.
These will not show subfolders.
Click on image to see larger version.
1. In this view Family and its subfolders are shown. Tap Edit then Add Mailbox...
2. You can add more mailboxes (folders) to show in list at top
In many apps (e.g. Safari) it is possible to save content as a PDF by clicking the share button and sending to iBooks.
This option is not available in all apps, including Mail, however. For these a PDF may be created via Print:
1. Select Print from share menu
2. The preview you see is PDF
3. Expand any page (reverse pinch or on newer iPhones may use force touch)
iOS 10 will soon be available (2016-09-13T18:00).
When I installed iOS 10 beta I had insufficient free space. I was given the option of having a few apps removed and
reinstalled after the update. iOS 10 updated successfully but the apps were not reinstalled. I re-downloaded them. Had
they been apps that contained a lot of data that I had created I would have retrieved from backup so that data would have
been preserved.
This issue has hopefully been fixed for the public release. I did report it.
When sending a PDF file as an attachment in (Apple's) Mail tap on it send select Markup from the pop-up menu.
May then insert signature. Fill out forms, sketch etc. See online manual
For a PDF in an email, tap and hold on the pdf and select Markup and Reply from the pop-up Share menu.
This is a bit clumsy as neither method allows you to directly save the annotated pdf unless you email it to yourself.
That changes with iOS10 in email and iCloud drive (and I expect othet apps once they have been updated for iOS 10)
PDFs may be annotated as they viewed for example in an email in the InBox by viewing then tapping on toolbox icon.
It is possible to capture the screen:
Press the power and home buttons (power button first).
The image is stored in Photos (in both Camera Roll and Screenshots albums)
For those with their own devices and a Mac the iOS device can be connected to Mac using the lightning to usb cable.
Launch QuickTime and select File - New Movie Recording.
Select the iOS device from source list and you can record what happens on device as a movie (with sound) on Mac.
Update 20170615
With iOS 11 it will be possible to do a screen recording on the device itself.
Update 20170822
Native screen recording is working with the latest public beta on my iPad Mini 2.
To potentially free up space:
Hold power button until you see "slide to power off" message
Release button
Hold home button until returned to normal display.
This will delete caches and other non-critical temporary content.
You have to type emails addresses, names etc quite often. I have some shortcuts set up:
Settings - General - Keyboard - Text Replacement
Click on + to add an entry
I have
Phrase: stephen.bedford@metoffice.gov.uk
Shortcut: .work
Phrase: stephen.bedford@...
Shortcut: .home
Phrase: Stephen Bedford
Shortcut: .name
And for phrases I can't type without setting multiple keyboards (Settings - General - Keyboard - keyboards)
I use the html codes:
Phrase: α
Shortcut: α
Phrase: β
Shortcut: β
Phrase: π
Shortcut: π
Note, there is no need to define Α, Β & Π seperately. As with html type the shorcuts in title case (Α etc.).
